In episode 10 Rick & John discuss how ‘I Ain’t The One‘ was really at the forefront of The Angels beginning their trademark Nik-Nik guitar flavour.

A track almost wholly written by John while sitting in a car on a hot day in the shade, along with Rick injecting some very canny lyric lines, the end result had the band so excited that they found themselves jumping up and down and punching the ceiling of the studio as they heard the track playing back.

Episode 9 reveals how Rick’s early 70’s obsession with photographing the down & out street people of Kings Cross instilled in him that stark, horrible feeling of loneliness which emananted from their lives and, in turn, those feelings made their way onto the album as the ballad ‘Outcast‘.

‘Face To Face’ 40th Anniversary – Episode 8 – Be With You

June 22nd, 2018

This year The Angels celebrate the 40th Anniversary of their album ‘Face To Face’ by touring to play the record live from start to finish along with a whole slew of their other chart topping singles.

Episode 8 delves into Rick & John’s memories surrounding the ballad ‘Be With You‘. One of two tracks from the album written in the piano room at Albert Studios.

Penned spontaneously by John & Doc, this track along with ‘Love Takes Care‘ is a classic example of the kind of composition that comes about from a straight ahead song writing session and then going right onto tape.

‘Face To Face’ 40th Anniversary – Episode 7 – Live It Up

June 15th, 2018

This year The Angels celebrate the 40th Anniversary of their album ‘Face To Face’ by touring to play the record live from start to finish along with a whole slew of their other chart topping singles.

Episode 7 sees the brothers halfway through a 12 part series of video interviews when Rick & John reflect on how the lively groove track ‘Live It Up‘ was grafted straight from a multi-track recording done at an early 2JJ radio station concert in Sydney.

Rick points out how the track has harmonica all over it and how this is a musical link which spills over from the group’s original foray into being a Jug Band.

The live performance filmed here at the Bridge Hotel also features John’s youngest son Harry Brewster fronting up on guitar, leaving his Dad free to pump the blue’s harp from start to finish.

In the sixth of a weekly 12 part series of video interviews the Brewster brothers shed light on the writing and recording of the band’s anthemic track ‘Marseilles‘. John reflects on how the combination of being flat broke, having a distortion pedal and driving a purple Renault drove him to write the song in the first place. Rick also gives some insight into that very famous end solo and how it had to fit a pre-existing bed track.

New Live & Studio Re-Recording Includes Extended Take A Long Line

To mark the current and upcoming tour, The Angels have completely re‐recorded a 2018 version of the album, both studio and live, including a very special extended version of the hit single Take A Long Line.

The CD release of the album will be available only at the gigs as a limited edition double album set and is certain to to become a collectors item.

One of the band’s most loved songs, and their first hit single in 1978, Take A Long Line peaked in the national charts at #26, remaining there for 29 weeks, while the Face To Face album itself remained in the charts for a year and a half.

The Angels were not to know it at the time, but they had unwittingly created the musical soundtrack of a generation.

Both Face To Face tours will see the band play the entire album live from beginning to end before a second set of all their other classic hits and favourites.

Rick Brewster says “… tracks like Straightjacket, Outcast, Love Takes Care, and Live It Up that don’t often make it into the live set will be a high point for both the band and the audience.
